Overview
The RYC Junior Sailing Program runs during the months of October – March. Every year, the program teaches approximately 60-70 junior sailors, aged 8 – 18, to safely enjoy the thrill of sailing. The program is accessible to a wide range of students of varying skill-levels and relies on volunteers to keep costs reasonable for all. Classes are taught in Optimists, El Toros and Lasers. Students usually bring their own boats to class, although 10 Optimist dinghies are available for charter to new students.
The RYC also operates a High-School program and Summer program though its Youth Sailing Director, Dan Brandt.
The Junior Sailing Program is Offered to:
- Students who are at least 8-years of age on the first day of class and are able to pay attention in class for up to 1 hour without individual supervision.
- Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced sailors in single-person “prams” (Optimists and El Toros)
- Advanced sailors in single-person Lasers
- Although most sailors bring their own boats to the RYC sailing program, a limited number of Optimist prams are available for charter to beginner students
- The RYC also operates a separate High School program for students who wish to train and compete as a team
Our Philosophy:
- Encourage the safe enjoyment of sailing…for juniors of all ages and inclinations
- Make sailing accessible, by keeping costs low and depending on the volunteer efforts of parents
- Enjoy the favorable learning conditions offered by the “Richmond Riviera”
- Reflects the values of the RYC, a club that was “Built for Fun.”
